Our own Matt Barker willl be presenting "Travel to Antarctica" to The Dover Club.
On average, Antarctica is the coldest, driest and windiest continent, and has the highest average elevation of all the continents. There are no permanent human residents and there is no evidence of any existing or pre-historic indigenous population. Only cold-adapted plants and animals survive there, including penguins, fur seals, mosses, lichen, and many types of algae.
"It was a real priviledge to go to bottom of the earth with my father and it is truly a magnificent continent."
Matt will show a short 5 min video and then a power point presentation with some truly remarkable pictures and stories.
Some Antarctica facts that will be shared:
• No one had ever seen Antarctica until 1820.
• No one Wintered there until 1898!
• 90% of the worlds ice is found in Antarctica
• 70% of the worlds fresh water is found in Anartica
• The ice is 3 miles deep at its thickest point.
• No single Nation rules Antarctica.
• Recorded 129 degrees below zero! Lowest temperature on earth
